INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS

Concepts of Physics
Physics is all about the things that happen around you.The main objective of this subject is to study and try to understand the universe and everything in it. Physics tries to explain how things work or why things happen.

What is Physics?
Physics is the branch of science which deals with matter and its relation to energy.
It involves study of physical and natural phenomena around us. Examples of these phenomena are formation of rainbow, occurrence eclipse, the fall of things from up to down, the cause of sunset and sunrise, formation of shadow and many more.

What is Science?
Science is the systematic (scientific) study of nature. The nature here refers to the physical and natural phenomena. The application of science is known as technology.

What is matter?
Matter is anything that occupies space and it has weight. Example of matter is the stone.

What is energy?
Energy is the ability or capability to do work.

Who is physicist?
Physicist is a person who studies physics. Physicist uses the scientific method to test hypotheses and develop scientific laws.
Some of the famous physicists are Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.

BRANCHES OF PHYSICS

Physics as a subject is divided into various branches as discussed below;

(i)     Mechanics
This branch deals with the study of motions under the influence of forces. Under this branch, we look into details the aspects of linear, circular and oscillatory motions as well as motions of fluids.

(ii)     Geometrical Optics
This branch deals with the study of the behavior of light in various media. This branch study the physical properties of light.

(iii)     Electromagnetism
This branch deals with the study of electrical and magnetic fields and the applications of such interactions.

(iv)     Thermodynamics
This branch deals with the study of heat as a form of energy and how is transformed to / from other forms of energy.

(v)     Atomic Physics
This branch deals with the study of atoms specifically the electron and its properties.

(vi)     Electronics
This branch deals with the study of electrons flow in circuit.

(vii)     Geophysics
This branch deals with the study of celestial bodies such as stars, galaxies, planets and natural phenomena like earthquake.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICS AND OTHER SUBJECTS

Physics enjoys a relationship with other subjects as discussed below;

1.      Physics and Mathematics
Physics relates strongly with mathematics because many physics concepts and physics formula are expressed mathematically. Thus, mathematics is the language used by physics to simplify its information and communication.

2.      Physics and Biology
Physics relates with biology because the knowledge of lenses in physics is used in making microscope used in study of cells and living things in biology.

3.      Physics and Chemistry
Physics relates with chemistry because physics has helped in explaining forces within atoms and therefore atomic structure which determines the reactivity of the atom as explained in chemistry.

4.      Physics and Geography
Physics relates with geography because various devices used in geography to study weather and climate are made from the application of physics.

5.      Physics and History
Physics relates with history because the study of radioactivity in physics has enabled the use of carbon 14 which used to determine dates in historical error (age).

THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING PHYSICS

The followings are the importance of studying physics;
1.      Knowledge expansion about nature
The study of physics expands our knowledge. We learn about how different machines work and also understand some natural phenomena such as earthquake, floods, and winds how they occur.

2.      Carrier development
Physicists can develop to further study to be doctors, engineers, computer scientists and many other carriers which require the knowledge of physics.

3.    Basis for most technology and scientific discoveries
Studying physics gives better understanding on a modern technology such as the use of computer, robots which are made from principle of physics.

 4.      Basis for other Disciplines
Physics helps to understand other subjects such as the agricultural, chemical biology and environmental science and much other science discipline.

5.      Physics improves quality of life
Physics help people to employ themselves and earn some money which then can improve their basic needs in life.

APPLICATION OF PHYSICS IN DAILY LIFE

1.      In communication
We use radio, television, telephone for communicating among every day

2.      In entertainment
We use music player, DVD players, and computer games for entertainment.

3.      In transportation
We use cars, airplanes, ships for travelling from one place to another place.

4.      In medicine
We use various machines in hospitals for diagnosis and treatment like X-ray machine, Ultra sound machine and thermometer.

5.      In agriculture
We use farm equipment such as tractors, harvesters, sprinkler  made by physician.
